The Time Capsule

The diary comic is back!

While packing to move out a few years ago I found a tupperware taped up and covered in stickers. Inside were various hair clips, toy parts, and most importantly this letter about my favorite things. The sealed envelope said "DO NOT OPEN TIL I'M 24." Here is a glimpse:

Leap of Faith

"I want to see the world, follow a map to its edges, and keep going. Forgo the plans. Trust my instincts. Let curiosity be my guide. I want to change hemispheres. Sleep with unfamiliar stars and let the journey unfold before me."

Some risks are worth taking, and I will be starting 2015 in this mindset. New York, you are embedded in my soul, and I love you. Australia, here I come.

The 14 Steps

In second grade (1996), our teacher had us keep a journal that she checked regularly. I wrote about random things like what I ate that day, some details about my family and pets, and simple occurrences. Although it started off as a small assignment, I continued journaling through elementary grades into high school. It's been a goal of mine to put images to some of my favorite entries. This semester I have explored it a bit and here is a peek into one of my favorite, most awkward documented moments: (edits to come soon)

First Finished Oil Painting

This semester in "Exploring Media" we rendered a model study in oil. I've really only used acrylic and watercolor in the past, so I'm ecstatic to have a new medium to play with.

New Semester Activities

This semester, FIT's Illustration MFA program includes jam packed studio time and hands on work (... and let's not forget about thesis writing). Mondays and Tuesdays we have "Exploring Media" through which we are currently exploring oil painting techniques with Martin Wittfooth. I guess I've been a fake artist up until this point because I have never ever touched oils before! Our two underpaintings will soon be brought to life with color. Thursday is "Traditional and Digital Integration" where we are getting refreshed in Photoshop, Painter, and Corel with Monika Maniecki. Saturday we are digging a bit deeper in Rudy Gutierrez's "Narrative Art" class where we are currently illustrating the modern evils emerged from Pandora's Box (images to come soon). Even though the schedule is so full, I'm looking forward to the new body of work at the end of this several month span.

Asian Adventure

This past holiday season I was lucky enough to take a trip of a lifetime to Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. With 30 other travelers from all over the world, we visited sights in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, traveled by boat to Pakbeng and Luang Prabang, by bus to Vangvieng and Vientiane, and flew to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. While we were busy sightseeing, kayaking, tubing, tuktuking, motor scootering, etc I attempted to document our trip in a small sketchbook. It was the most special Christmas and New Years I've ever spent - it will be difficult to top this one! #noregrets

History of Illustration

A recent assignment encouraged us to explore past illustrators. We learned more about illustration's golden age and various artists from the 1890s to the 1960s. Our assignment was to replicate the style of four different illustrators, from four different decades, using traditional media.

1920's Clara Bow in the style of Bradshaw Crandall - pastels 5"x7"

Work of MFA Illustration Students and Faculty

Gallery FIT
November 9 - December 7, 2013

Students and faculty of the MFA in Illustration program at FIT visually reflect on the 50th anniversary of two seminal events in American History.

My piece for this exhbiit is titled "Bankruptcy"

"We refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt." In the last fifty years, Americans of different races, genders, and ages have continued to demand their freedoms. The funds are growing and more checks are clearing, yet the richness and security of equality seems interminable.

Capturing TMLA

I'm currently in the Illustration MFA program at FIT. One of my current assignments is to fill up a themed sketchbook. I went back and forth on ideas based on my interests and honestly, convenience. When does one have time to do this when working and in school full time? So I chose work. The Mary Louis Academy is near and dear to me as it is where I graduated from and currently teach. It's not your ordinary school setting. Set on a campus, this all girls catholic school has been around since 1936. It's a beautiful place to be and an even lovelier place to draw.

First time at the Art Students League of NY

I can't believe I've lived in NYC my whole life, studied in Manhattan, visited every museum multiple times, but never went to the Art Students League. With such a vast and exciting history, it was about time I made it there. I went for their figure drawing session and experimented with some different materials.
